Cloaking is one of the darker techniques to search engine optimization and it is not recommended in the SEO of your website. The cloaking of pages is done through software applications and its sole purpose is to trick search engines, by presenting them with specifically manufactured content to win favorable ranking status. However, the content that is shown to website visitors is hidden so as not to be read by search engines and disclosed upfront to web searchers.

This is an underhanded way to get visitors to your website and usually unsuccessful in encouraging them to stick around long enough to make a purchase. This is deceptive advertising at its worst and you and your website are better off if you avoid cloaking techniques.

It is better to show one remarkable page of content that both search engines and website visitors will see, then to cloak pages when you are doing SEO. You want to build your business up and that is why you are involved in the search engine optimization of your website. Do not tear down your business by getting involved in using the darker techniques to SEO.

Do not believe anyone that flaunts that this software application is an undetectable way to get ahead of your competition. The detection of this activity may be somewhat slower in some search engines, but the search engine giants have sophisticated technology to detect and exile cloaked pages very quickly. Even the slower search engines will eventually uncover cloaked pages and remove them.

How do cloaking programs work? The use of cloaking software applications is especially favored by internet spammers, they do not worry about a particular website becoming detected by search engines and servers. This is because they regularly build disposable websites to use short term and then abandon quickly as soon as it becomes detected as a spamming website. Internet spammers operate in the same manner as scam artists offline. They exploit an area for as long as possible, but then pack up and run when authorities attempt to close in on them.

You do not need to turn to the darker techniques of search engine optimization in order to get a large helping of the billions of dollars that online consumers spend through the internet each year. Adhering to good form when you are doing SEO is a better way to improve the ranking of your website in search engines in order to get more traffic to your website and those online dollars.

Por qué nos preocupamos tanto de los rankings cuando medimos el éxito de las acciones SEO?

Acomodarse en la simpleza de proveer informes de visibilidad que detallen el ranking para palabras clave en los principales motores de búsqueda como Google, Yahoo, y MS Live Search puede resultar todavía un ejemplo excelente e ilustrativo de cómo se viene demostrando el éxito de un proyecto SEO. Pero existen otras formas diferentes que hacen que este método, hasta ahora habitual, sea irrelevante desde una perspectiva de resultados y retorno de la inversión (ROI). El aparecer en las primeras posiciones para una palabra clave determinada no significa nada si el tráfico generado por ésta no ofrece los resultados esperados en términos de rentabilidad: ventas, reservas, prospectos, registros, etc..

Realmente nos deberíamos preguntar cuál es el verdadero valor de los rankings hoy en día ya que, históricamente el ranking obtenido en los resultados de los motores de búsquedas ha sido la métrica principal para evaluar el éxito en un trabajo SEO. Pero, ¿es realmente necesario controlar y realizar continuos y rutinarios informes de seguimiento del ranking a nuestros clientes?

¿Debemos preocuparnos y hacer que se preocupen los clientes por los rankings? Pienso sinceramente que no, porque el éxito de una campaña SEO debe ser medido de otra forma, teniendo en cuenta factores tan importantes como el tráfico de calidad y las conversiones.

El apasionante horizonte de los buscadores
El ranking puede oscilar por múltiples razones, y la fijación constante de esas fluctuaciones pueden volver loco a cualquiera. Por ejemplo, Google ofrece diferentes resultados basados en la localización física del usuario, el historial de búsqueda, la configuración del lenguaje, etc.. Vivir en diferentes lugares y poseer diferentes intereses, podría considerar relevantes aspectos que otras personas de otros lugares no lo consideraran igual, por lo que, los resultados que se mostrasen serían sin duda diferentes para uno y otro.

Cada vez y con mayor frecuencia, buscadores como Google, bloquean los programas de chequeo de rankings que son habitualmente utilizados para el seguimiento y verificación de las posiciones en los rankings. El caso de Webposition ha sido conocido por ser la primera víctima en ser bloqueada por Google para las millones de consultas automatizadas que realizaba diariamente con el objetivo de ofrecer datos actualizados y en tiempo real de las posiciones. Google no oculta que la personalización en las búsquedas es una de las áreas más importantes en las que se están focalizando en estos momentos.

Por un motivo fundamental, no vamos a ser capaces de conocer los datos personales que google vaya recopilando.

Las Métricas
Tenemos tendencia a optimizar y mejorar la posición o ranking de un site en los motores de búsqueda como principal objetivo, pero el bloqueo a los programas de chequeo y la personalización en los resultados ya son motivos más que suficientes para no preocuparse de ello. Realmente, deberíamos fijarnos en otras métricas mucho más relevantes en términos de ROI como las siguientes:

- Variación del tráfico procedente de las búsquedas.
– Variación del tráfico procedente de las búsquedas por palabras clave.
– Variación de las conversiones procedentes del tráfico de las búsquedas.
– Variación de las conversiones procedentes del tráfico de las búsquedas por palabras clave.
– Etc..

Estas métricas de ejemplo, nos aportan una mejor información que los rankings en los motores de búsqueda. Pero se puede ir más allá determinando la calidad del tráfico de los motores de búsqueda que se genera. Tomar una de estas métricas y analizar el porcentaje de rebote, el tiempo de permanencia en el sitio, la cantidad de visitas que repiten, etc.. Estas métricas no nos dirán mucho de forma individual, por lo que, debemos centrarnos en un proceso integral en el que tengamos en cuenta todas las variables más que las métricas por ellas mismas.

¿Decrece el porcentaje de rebote de una página web después de haberla optimizado por una palabra clave específica? Entonces esto es una señal de que los usuarios, están encontrando lo que buscan. Si la tasa de rebote se está incrementando mientras hacemos SEO, podríamos estar trabajando una palabra clave errónea.

Las métricas que dicen algo sobre la calidad del tráfico no son leyes solidas para poder aplicar de forma universal a cada página web. Algunas veces una estancia duradera en una página web es una buena señal, por ejemplo, para un blog en el que tenga artículos muy largos. Pero cuando el tiempo es muy elevado en una web de e-commerce podría ser una clara señal de que los visitantes no pueden encontrar lo que están buscando. Lo mismo ocurriría con otras métricas como la de rebote y retorno de visitantes.

No sería sorpresa ni mucho menos el decir que para esto es fundamental utilizar aplicaciones de Analítica Web y así poder medir y controlar las métricas que hemos mencionado. La elección del software en cuestión, dependerá de nuestros objetivos, demanda y experiencia en web analytics. Pero las métricas mencionadas pueden ser perfectamente analizadas con aplicaciones gratuitas de analítica web como Google Analytics, Yahoo Index Tools o Microsoft AdCenter Analytics. Educando al Cliente
¿Ha sido el Cliente lo suficientemente claro al indicarnos sus objetivos para la estrategia SEO? Es nuestra labor comunicar al cliente qué palabras clave van a producir los mejores resultados, no los mejores rankings. No deberíamos hacer olvidar al cliente el principal reto del SEO, que no consiste ni mucho menos en alcanzar los primeros puestos del ranking para determinadas palabras clave. Existen métricas más importantes a la hora de analizar el éxito de una campaña SEO.

Eduquemos al cliente en la correcta dirección tanto como podamos. Puede resultar realmente un concepto difícil para alguno de ellos ya que los rankings son a menudo, el mejor recurso para vanagloriarse. Pero una vez los tengamos convencidos de la poca aportación y vacío que conlleva el trabajar con rankings, seremos libres de tirar el listado de los rankings por la borda de una vez por todas y hacerlo a nuestro modo para lograr el verdadero éxito en SEO.

Debemos entonces analizar las cosas que realmente importan como el tráfico de calidad y sobre todo, el índice o ratio de conversiones. Qué buenos tiempos aquellos cuando podíamos decir que hacíamos nuestro trabajo lanzando informes de rankings cada mes e informando al cliente de todas las variaciones obtenidas. Pero eso, lamentablemente, ya no sirve para los días que corren… Hoy tenemos que ser capaces de mostrar además al cliente, un retorno positivo de su inversión en SEO, o no haremos nuestro trabajo correctamente.

Lo que importa es el ROI
¿Qué valor tienen los rankings en los resultados de las búsquedas si no convierten?

El ROI en SEO puede definirse como el beneficio que obtenemos por cada unidad monetaria invertida en la generación de tráfico durante un periodo de tiempo. Utilizamos el ROI para llevar a cabo un análisis de la viabilidad de las diferentes campañas o esfuerzos de optimización que se están realizando y también nos permite medir el éxito de las mismas o adaptar las acciones en función de los resultados.

Debemos focalizar todos los esfuerzos en la medición del retorno de la inversión (ROI) a través de métricas que nos aporten de la forma más rápida, clara y sencilla esta información. Lograr una buen feedback sobre la calidad del tráfico y la tasa de conversión pero interpretándolas con cuidado y no perdiendo el norte de nuestra estrategia.
